Airfield lighting and systems engineer
When considering his career choices, anything with an engine was initially the only criteria for Nathan Kavumbura. Now an engineer looking after airfield lighting systems for Airways, Nathan knows he’s realised his childhood dream of getting into aviation.
Working in Asia, it was Airways’ solid reputation that motivated Nathan to move his family to New Zealand.
“Airways is unique in the sense that it is a place where you have a lot of people with very different skills, all very qualified in what they do. A lot of very intelligent brains meeting together and achieving this one goal which is to keep aviation safe. It’s quite inspiring.”
As an engineer, Nathan’s role involves design, problem solving and dealing with issues that come up on a day to day basis.
There’s so many things you can do at Airways. It’s just a matter of identifying what you want to do and grabbing the opportunities.
“I deal with engineering and maintenance, as well as our projects, planning, and finance teams. I think what fires me out of bed in the morning is looking forward to the next challenge. And it could be anything. You could wake up in the morning and there’s a system that has failed and you need to help troubleshoot and figure out what’s wrong with it, supporting the guys who are working on the ground to fix it. Every day is a really interesting challenge.”
“I work with engineering teams across the country, and I think they’re a great bunch of people. We enjoy working together, we laugh at each other, and we laugh at ourselves. If a young person was thinking about a career in aviation or anything that we do at Airways I wouldn’t have any hesitation in saying go for it, just do it,” says Nathan.
