Engineering Career Opportunities
A critical aspect of air traffic control is the various aircraft navigation and communication systems that use computers, radar, radios, and other instruments and devices to provide guidance to flying aircraft.
The Systems Engineering Unit is responsible for providing consultancy, planning and advice around these different air traffic and navigation systems.
We have four key teams of engineers:
Communications and Surveillance
The Communications & Surveillance Engineering Team provides life cycle planning, installation project management, and escalated support for the following systems:
- Primary & Secondary Radar
- Multi-lateration and ADS-B (aircraft surveillance) systems
- Voice Switch communications systems
- Radio communications systems including Radio Links
- Remote Control & Monitoring Systems
Network development
The Network Development Team is responsible for the implementation and maintenance of the networks used by the Air Navigation Service Business using Cisco products for individual systems and Frequentis products for the backbone infrastructure.
We work closely with all aspects of the business to determine requirements and also have strong relationships with New Zealand telecommunication providers.
Navigation systems
The Airways Navigation Engineering unit carries out life cycle management and support of ground based navigation systems (such as Instrument Landing Systems, Distance Measuring Equipment and Satellite Landing Systems) that support air traffic operations. This includes investigation, system design, specification development and post installation support of new and existing conventional as well as satellite based navigation systems.
Airways also carries out its own Flight Inspection of the ground based navigational facilities regularly to ensure integrity of its navigational network and that it is maintained to international standards and guidelines.
While the navigation engineering and flight inspection unit mainly support the domestic needs in New Zealand, it also provides consultancy and support for navigation systems for international Air Navigation Service (ANS) providers.

Aerodrome lighting and power
The Aerodrome Lighting and Power Team consists of 8 specialist engineers who provide specialist advice, systems planning, design, project management, contract management and also support to the Facilities maintenance teams in the areas of Airfield Lighting, Power Supply and Reticulation, Standby Power Supply, Uninterruptible Power Supply, Air-conditioning and Building Services.

Technical Careers Snapshot - Jeremy Stevens
Jeremy joined Airways as a Technical Trainee in 2006.
After completing his Bachelor of Engineering Technology, Jeremy headed to Laos for a year to a job he knew very little about, and ended up working in remote areas installing and repairing radio communication systems for Gold/Copper mines and NGO’s clearing bombs from the Vietnam War.
“As my contract was drawing to a close I decided I wanted to head back to NZ to find a job that would provide me with some career progression in an out of the ordinary industry. I applied for a job as a Technical Trainee within Airways. This allowed me to get my foot in the door and soon they had me heading all over the country to some very interesting places. I was assisting and learning from other technical people within Airways.”
After completing his training, a position became available with the Technical Coordinators. Their main focus is the monitoring of operational equipment like Radars, MUXs, VHF Radios and much much more. This gave Jeremy a great overview of the company and also allowed him to get into more installation work.
“I got involved in some awesome projects like the Queenstown Multilateration (surveillance) project where we spent the majority of our days flying into the mountains by helicopter to install large Multilat sites”.
Jeremy has also taken part in a project installing VHF radios and Voice Recorders throughout Queensland, Australia.
“I was lucky and got to spent 3 months working there in some of Australia’s most amazing holiday destinations.”
Jeremy has now moved into the Navigation Engineering area of the company. In this role he will manage projects that involve the upgrading and installation of navaids across New Zealand and the world.
“The people within Airways are great. I’ve flatted with 3 of them and made a lot of friends. They are all very friendly and helpful and this is what helps make Airways such a great place to work.”
