Airways provides air traffic control guidance to aircraft via our navigation and communication systems. These computers, radar, radios, and other instruments and devices are installed and maintained by our talented team of engineers.
Our engineers work across communications and radio, network development, navigation systems, and aerodrome lighting and power.
Specifically, this can include:
primary and secondary radar
multilateration and ADS-B (aircraft surveillance) systems
voice switch communications systems
radio communications systems including radio links
remote control and monitoring systems
flight inspection and calibration
Our network uses products from Cisco, Juniper, RAD, Frequentis and more. Juniper is used as our MPLS backbone, along with RAD where required. Cisco being used within the Enterprise, making up our operational and supporting networks. We are a security focused organisation using a varying range of security appliances where required.
We have a full complement of network, systems and specialist engineers working across our technology undertaking design, development, post installation support, investigation and planning. Our team also provides full project and contract management.
New Zealand is one of a handful of countries worldwide that provides full maintenance and development of its own air traffic control systems. We have complete access to the full source code of all our systems, and have been updating them in collaboration with international manufacturers for more than 20 years.
Air traffic control software is as complex as it gets. It's a safety critical, high availability, distributed system, meaning there is no downtime. The system must run 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, even during system upgrades.
