Career Options
As well as the operational careers listed going from a regional tower, to an main trunk tower, area or oceanic controller to approach controller there are a variety of other careers you will be able to engage in parallel or in addition to your operational progression.
Technical Support
- System Support Specialists - work to support operational equipment used by the controllers and pilots to ensure flight operations are conducted in a safe and efficient manner. Typically work includes the design and development of specifications which will enhance the operating system's performance as well as database management. One of the most critical systems is SkyLine which provides radar and flight plan information for IFR flights within New Zealand. This information is used by controllers to keep such aircraft separated to ensure safety of flight.
- Planning and Policy - work to optimise the utilisation of airspace through the design of procedures, assess the impact of technology and aircraft types on operations and work with local government on planning and other regulations.
Quality and Standards
- Check Instructors - provide annual checks of staff
to ensure their level of skill is being maintained.
- Standards Specialists - the Standards Specialist role is to provide operational analysis; advice and information to the Management Team to ensure standards and customer expectation are continually met or exceeded in the provision of operational Air Traffic Services and to enhance safety as the prime responsibility. They also assist with or develop procedures for use by Controllers and initiate changes to operational documents.
- Systems Safety - carry out investigations of any incidents that may occur - these can be breaches of procedure or aircraft getting too close together on the ground or in the air. Knowledge of human factors and expertise in ATC are needed for this area.
- Examiners - Assess Trainees at various stages of
training and are responsible for the final signoff for issuing
an ATC License or ATC rating.
Training
- On-the-job Trainers - work with people arriving at new positions to provide day-to-day training for them to use the local procedures and deal with local issues.
- ATC Instructors - conduct classroom and simulator training in the Training Centre. As the Training Centre adopts a 'train for success' philosophy it is necessary for instructors to be motivated, flexible and enthusiastic in achieving the results for students. A broad range of aviation subjects are taught at the Centre and ATC instructors are encouraged and supported in keeping current in all areas of aviation.
