New Chairman for Airways New Zealand

The Minister for State Owned Enterprises has appointed Mr Con Anastasiou to succeed Errol Millar as Chairman of Airways New Zealand, effective from 1 January 2005.

Mr Anastasiou joined the Airways Board in 2000 and brings a strong understanding of Airways' business to the leadership of Airways' Board of Directors. His appointment extends through to 2007.

Mr Anastasiou is a lawyer specialising in corporate commercial law, intellectual property law, and resource management, and is also Chairman of the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences Limited.

The Minister has also extended the term of the Deputy Chairman, Janine Smith, to April 2006, and that of Director Anne Urlwin to April 2008.

Outgoing Chairman, Mr Millar, says he has enjoyed immensely his nearly eight years on the Airways Board of Directors.

"In that time the company has seen significant performance improvement in all aspects of its operations including financial performance, safety, customer service and peoples' development."

"Our offshore presence has grown considerably and we are now known as one of the best performing Air Navigation Service providers in the world. I leave the company in good heart and wish Con, the Board, and the management team and staff, all the very best for the future," says Mr Millar.

Mr Anastasiou says he is very excited about the future of Airways New Zealand, and is proud to be appointed to the position.

"Airways has gone from strength to strength under the guidance and leadership of former Chairman Errol Millar. He leaves the company in excellent health, and in good heart."

"Errol's contribution to Airways, and to the aviation industry in New Zealand generally, has been substantial. Airways Board and management wish Errol every success in his future endeavours," says Mr Anastasiou.
