In October 2013, Airways concluded a 12-month ‘SMART approaches’ trial. The intention of the trial - run in collaboration with Auckland Airport and the Board of Airline Representatives New Zealand - was to improve flight path and aircraft efficiency, and reduce the impact of aircraft noise on the community.
SMART approaches are part of a worldwide drive by the aviation industry and regulators to improve flight paths. Using the accuracy of satellite-based navigation, SMART approaches follow a curved approach to the runway and create a more continuous descent, reducing fuel consumption and carbon emissions, and enabling better noise management for local communities.
